Chapter 17: The Final
The Lakeview Grand was a gold and marble hotel on the far side of the city.
It was forty minutes from the arena and the brick house.
I had texted Doran from the car.
"I'm going. I'm not starting a war the night before the Cup final."
"Tell me where," he wrote back. "Right now."
I told him.
My suite had a fruit basket, a view of the black lake, and a card on the pillow.
"Rest well. Focus is everything. Your phone will be held at the desk for the duration."
I laughed out loud, because I thought it was a joke.
It was not a joke.
Two minutes later a man in a hotel blazer knocked on my door and held out his hand for my phone.
"The room phone is off, too," he said. "And you have no visitors until further notice, ma'am. Ms. Hartley's office was specific."
"Is this a hotel or a hospital?"
"I'm very sorry."
"Are you the guard?"
"I'm the night manager. The guard is in the hall."
