Chapter 18: Friday Morning

Mason's POV

I drove to Boston in the dark, with the heater broken and nobody in my head.

It was the quietest two hours I'd had in three weeks.

I used them to work out a way to say no that Lila couldn't argue with.

I got to the club's office at half past six.

A man in a fleece vest was already there, unlocking the front door with a coffee in his teeth. It was the general manager.

He knew my face from the game film.

"Doyle," he said around the cup. "You're early. We've got the pens set out for ten."

"I'm not signing today," I said.

He took the cup out of his mouth.

"Say that again?"

"I came to tell you to your face. I'm finishing the season. I'm finishing my degree. If the offer's gone, it's gone."

He looked at me for a while.

"Come in," he said. "Sit."

We sat in a glass office with a poster of last year's team.

"I'll be honest," he said. "The January camp date wasn't our idea. Courtney's father called the owner two weeks ago and said you'd prefer an early start. Said the school had agreed. Said you were bringing a family."

I felt the heat climb my neck.

"I never said any of that."

"I figured. Something smelled off." He pulled a printed sheet from a folder and slid it across the desk. "That's the email the owner forwarded me. You can have it. I don't like being used to push a kid around."

I read it twice.
