Chapter 5: Glass

The door handle rattled once.

I was lying naked on a steel table with a naked emperor on top of me, and I stopped breathing.

"Sam?" said a man's voice in the corridor.

It was the guard from the front desk, a heavy, kind man who eats sunflower seeds all night.

"Lab light's on. You in there?"

Sam lifted his head from my neck.

His face did not change at all.

"Cleaning check," he called, in a voice as calm as a lake. "I have it."

"Copy. Don't scrub too hard, man."

The footsteps went away down the corridor.

The motion light clicked off.

I put my hand over my mouth, shaking.

Sam looked down at me with a deadpan face and the very corner of his mouth twitching.

"Cleaning check," I whispered.

"It is a recognized duty."

"You're on top of me."

"It is a very thorough check."

I laughed so hard the table rattled, and he put his hand over my mouth and laughed with me, silently.

Every shake of it moved him inside me.

We both stopped.

He was still half hard, still warm and thick where we were joined.

At the first little shift of my hips he began to swell again.

"Oh," I said.

"Yes."

"Again?"

"I have been given a great deal of time to recover," he said. "I find I do not need much of it."

I pulled him down by the back of his neck and kissed him.

Then I said into his mouth, "Not here. Get dressed. Trousers only."

He got off the table.

I put my coat on over nothing and buttoned it wrong.

We went up the service stairs in the dark, barefoot, with my hand in his.

When we came out into Gallery Four the red exit sign lit the room.

The Crown of Tessar sat in its case in the middle of the floor, on its red velvet, with the dent facing the door.

I had been looking at that crown for nine years.

I walked up to the glass case and put my palms flat on the top.

It was cold.

"Take off my coat," I said.

He came up behind me.

He slid the coat off my shoulders, and it fell to the floor.

I stood there bare in a cold dark gallery in front of the most expensive object in the building.

"Look at it," I said.

I felt him hesitate behind me.

"Look at what you used to be."

"I have seen it," he said quietly.

"Look."

I could hear him breathing.

I felt the warmth of his chest almost touching my back, and the heat of him against the backs of my thighs.

I bent forward over the glass.

I laid my forearms on the top and my cheek on my arm.

I put my hips back toward him and let him see everything.

I heard him say a word in Tessarine, soft and broken.

I did not need a translator.

Then he dropped to his knees on the marble behind me.

His hands parted me, and his mouth came down, hot and wet, with no warning at all.
