Chapter 16: The Night Between
The noodles were terrible.
Shuang had rolled the dough herself and cut it in strips of five different widths, and the broth tasted faintly of burned ginger.
Chu ate three bowls.
"You are lying," she said.
"I am eating."
"You are eating so you will not have to say it is bad."
"It is bad." He wiped his mouth. "I would like a fourth."
She laughed.
It was a real laugh, startled out of her, and the sound went through the quiet room.
It was the ninth night.
Su Mian had taken the sealed pages of the physician's roll to the Council's lawful clerks, with ten of the old sergeant's men for escort.
The Emperor slept in the Inner Palace, under the guard of two hundred Northern Army soldiers who had not asked permission.
Chu had sealed his channels with a lock of qi before he left, good until dawn.
Han lay in a cell in the Court of Review, in Cell Nine, with the chain on his wrist.
Chu had chosen that cell himself.
Nothing could be done until dawn.
Shuang's mother had put a plate of dumplings on the table, patted Chu's cheek like a son's, and gone to bed without a word.
