Chapter 16: The Badge Log
Gao opened the black ledger on her knee and turned it round so the committee could see.
"Every long case the chief has done in eight years, President," she said. "The date, the patient, the time he stepped back, and who closed."
She turned a page. "I started it the week after the first time his hand went."
"Why?" asked Qiu.
"Because I thought someone might one day use it against him. I wanted to be able to show what it cost."
Gao's voice was flat and clear.
"Three hundred and eleven cases. Not one patient harmed by the chief's hand."
She did not blink. "I handed him the clamp before he asked, every time, and the closing went to the deputy director, every time."
She looked directly across the table.
"The deputy director has been at his left for eight years. He knows precisely what I have written."
Every head in the observers' row turned to Lu.
The chairs along the wall had been filling since the first hour, because news travelled faster in that hospital than the lifts.
"President," said Lu, smiling. "I suspected the chief was tired. I did not know."
"For eight years," said Qiu, "you suspected your chief was tired. And you raised it with this committee when?"
