Chapter 6: Moose Deadline
I stared down at the message on my screen.
A book.
A real publisher in New York wanted my diary about not kissing my boyfriend.
I typed, "Can I think about it?"
She wrote back in under a minute. "Of course! Take your time. Just keep posting. Whatever you're doing, it's working."
The moose looked back at me with no antlers and a potato face.
The moose was not working.
The moose was due December 1st, and it was October 29th, and I had finished eleven spreads out of sixteen.
On Thursday morning the moose-book editor emailed, very kindly, to ask how the spreads were coming along, with three exclamation points and no actual questions.
That's how editors yell.
So I stopped being a girl with a secret diary, and I became a girl with a deadline.
I worked at the drafting table in the front window from seven in the morning until my hand cramped.
Spread twelve. The moose alone on a frozen lake, looking at ducks who all have friends.
Spread thirteen. The moose trying to join a beaver family and knocking over their dam.
At one o'clock I heard the apartment door open.
I didn't turn around. I was in the middle of a beaver.
Heavy boots across the floor. A plate set down at my elbow, very gently, on the one corner of the table not covered in paper.
Then the boots went away.
The door closed.
I looked down.
A turkey sandwich, on the good bread, with the crusts cut off, because I am twenty-five years old and I still don't like crusts.
A pickle on the side.
A paper napkin, and on the napkin, in black pen, a tiny bear holding up a sign that said EAT.
He'd walked four blocks on his lunch break to make it.
