Chapter 16: The Rest of the Letter

The Sarnelli plot lay on the hill above the bay, behind a black iron gate, in a wind that smelled of salt.

I arrived at five to ten with the lawyer and the letter in my coat.

The family was already there.

Madre stood at the head of the grave in black, her gold cross outside her collar. Two of her sisters flanked her, with their husbands and a cousin from Pozzuoli.

Tommaso stood a little apart, bareheaded, with his hands behind him.

He saw me and straightened. I did not nod.

"Marisa," Madre said. "I hope you've not brought this family out here to make a spectacle."

"I've brought you here to hear him," I said.

I stopped at the stone.

My father-in-law's photograph looked out of the marble. He had the same square jaw as his son, and a much kinder mouth.

"Papa," I said. "I waited as long as you asked. I'm sorry it was so long."

I took the letter out.

"Some of you know this envelope was left for me," I said. "Marcella has known since the day he died. She's spent years trying to get it from me."

"That is a lie," one of the sisters said.

"It is a very short lie," said the lawyer, quietly. "He told me himself."

I unfolded the back of the letter, the lines below the ones I had read in the vault.

"Figlia mia," I read. "You have the shares. Do not be afraid of them. A harbour is only a long street, and people live on it."
