Chapter 18: Come Home Any Day

The court made the divorce final on a Monday in April, six months to the day after Tommaso signed.

The lawyer brought the decree to my office at the port himself, in a white envelope.

I had taken the corner room on the fourth floor, the one that faced the water.

Nobody had asked me to. The dockers' wives had sent flowers for the door.

"Donna Marisa," the lawyer said. "You are a free woman."

"Thank you."

"You've been one for some time, if I may say so."

I laughed, and signed for the envelope.

He had barely gone when the secretary put her head round the door.

"Signor Sarnelli is downstairs. He says he'll wait as long as it takes."

I looked at the decree on my desk for a minute.

"Send him up."

Tommaso came in alone.

He was thinner, and the good suit hung wrong on him.

There was grey at his temples that had not been there in the autumn.

He put a leather folder on my desk and did not sit.

"I know what today is," he said.

"Yes."

"I haven't come to argue. I came to give you these."

I opened the folder.

On top was a letter of resignation from the board of Sarnelli Porto, signed, dated and witnessed.

Under it was a deed.

"The casino," I said.

"It was in my name. It's yours, or the harbour's, or whoever you say." He cleared his throat. "I thought the pension fund for the dockers' widows. It's what he asked you to look after."
