Chapter 10: Soft Spot

Tanner was alone in the kitchen when I walked in.

Through the window over the new sink I could see Kou and Mikko in the driveway, unloading a ladder from the back of the Ranger and arguing about which end went first.

Tanner stood at the pantry doorway with a pencil and a tape measure, in a flannel shirt with the sleeves pushed up.

He did not turn around.

"Britta," he said.

"Good morning," I said.

"I've been up since four." He turned his head, slowly. "I keep thinking about the garage."

My face went hot.

"I know where they are," he said.

He dropped the pencil on the island.

He crossed the floor in two strides, took my face in both hands, and kissed me, hard.

It was nothing like the careful first night.

It was hungry.

It tasted of coffee.

I made a noise into his mouth and put my work bag on the floor without looking.

"They're right outside," I said, against his lips.

"Then be quick," he said. "Be quiet."

He backed me into the pantry doorway, out of sight of the window, and went to work on the buttons of my blouse.

He opened it to the waist and pulled the cups of my bra down under my breasts, and bent his head.

His beard dragged over my skin, rough and warm.

He took a nipple in his mouth and sucked.

The pull went straight down between my legs.

I put my hand over my own mouth.
