Chapter 15: The Counter
The quartz had gone in on Saturday afternoon, and I had not been allowed to touch it.
Kou's friend came with two men and a template and put it down in pieces, white with a gray thread running through it.
Kou had stood over the seams for an hour with a level, and by dark he had pronounced them acceptable.
I sent all three of them home that night, and I slept eleven hours alone, and woke with nothing hurting but my pride.
On Sunday I came downstairs at seven in my robe, and the kitchen smelled of coffee.
Kou and Mikko were already there.
It was a Sunday, and nobody was paying them.
They knelt side by side at the lower cabinets with a drill and a box of brushed-nickel pulls between them, putting handles on my drawers.
"Brit!" Mikko said. "We're working. Look how we're working."
"It's Sunday."
"We know," Kou said. "Tanner said the pulls could wait until Monday. We did not want to wait."
"For free," Mikko said, and held up a drawer pull. "I'm going to say that every time now. It's my whole personality."
I laughed.
Then I stopped, because Kou had put the drill down and was looking at the counter.
It lay along the wall under the window, long and clean and cold-looking, and the morning light ran down it in a single white strip.
"It will hold a person," Kou said. "I asked my friend. He said it was rated for much more than that."
"Why did you ask your friend that?" I said.
"I did not tell him why."
Mikko put his head down on the cabinet door and shook.
