Chapter 15: The Desk
Jo's POV
On Wednesday morning Cal met me at the clinic's back door holding his phone out at arm's length.
"I'm asking," he said. "Is this fake?"
I took it.
It was an email from the Asset Recovery Bureau.
They had located the seller who took his money, it said, and would release nine thousand two hundred dollars for a three hundred dollar processing fee.
It was due by five o'clock.
"Cal," I said.
"I know. I thought it might be." He rubbed the back of his neck. "I typed my card number in the box. I didn't press the button. I came here instead."
"You asked me first."
"That's the rule."
"It's your rule. You made it for me."
"It works both ways," he said.
I laughed and had to put my hand on the wall.
He grinned, and then his face went careful again.
"Where do you report this?"
"There's a fraud help table at the library," I said. "Wednesdays, ten to noon."
It was where I had been planning to take the pages and the roster, if there was a roster.
I had not planned for who would be sitting behind the table.
The library was bright and quiet and smelled of carpet.
At the end of the reference room, under a banner that said SCAM HELP DESK, a man in a pressed shirt sat with a laminated lanyard on his chest.
The lanyard said VOLUNTEER.
Cal slowed down beside me.
"Is that who I think it is?"
"Yes."
"He's wearing a lanyard."
"I noticed."
Wylie stood up.
He looked like he had slept in the car, and he had a folder open in front of him.
"I got in at seven last night," he said. "I came here at nine this morning. They gave me a badge. They were short."
"Hello, Wylie."
"Jo."
