Chapter 6: Before I Bled

The call came into the clinic at ten past nine on Wednesday, when the vet had already gone home.

"Cutbank Animal Hospital."

"It's Conall Harlan."

I almost hung up.

"I have a young wolf from my pack, hit by a logging truck on the county road. Our healer is out at Lorna's, and he's losing blood. The vet in town is the only place I trust."

"We don't treat wolves."

"You've treated three of mine in two years." His breath rasped. "You know you have."

That was true.

The vet knew what the pack was, and he stayed quiet about it, and he'd taught me to do the stitching myself.

"Bring him to the back door," I said.

They came in four minutes later.

Conall carried the animal in both arms, a big young grey wolf with his back leg bent wrong and blood soaking the front of Conall's flannel.

He laid him on the steel table like something he was afraid to break.

I pulled on gloves.

"Hold his head," I said. "Keep your hand under his jaw and talk to him. He needs to hear your voice."

"What do I say?"

"Say his name."

Conall said the name, low and steady, and the wolf's ear twitched.

I cleaned the wound and began to stitch.

The leg was the worst of it, a long tear down the thigh that had missed the artery by a quarter inch.
