Chapter 4: Steel Trap

I did not cry about the folder.

I put the candy in my pocket, because it was evidence too, and I went downstairs in my socks.

Faye was in the kitchen, humming and frying eggs in a pink apron.

"Good morning, angel," she said. "Did you sleep well?"

My words stuck.

I walked past her, out the front door, and down the steps in my socks, and I climbed into the back seat of the big gray car at the end of the driveway.

It was Uncle Desmond's car.

He came to get me every Saturday.

He came out ten minutes later with a bag of donuts, and he stopped when he saw me already buckled in.

"You're early, counselor," he said.

He got in, shut the door, and looked at me in the mirror.

"Something happened."

"The file is gone," I said.

I said it all in one breath, and for once nothing got stuck, because Faye was not in the car.

"Somebody took it from under my mattress when I was asleep. The red stickers and the drawings and all the dates. And they left a candy on my pillow."

I took the candy out of my pocket and held it up.

Uncle Desmond put the donuts down very gently on the passenger seat.

"Who has been in your room?"

"Nobody comes in," I said. "Except her."

He didn't say anything.

He started the car and drove us down the street and around the corner, away from the house, and he parked under a big maple tree.
