Chapter 6: One Whole Sentence

On Monday morning, Faye packed a suitcase.

It was a small blue one with wheels, and she set it by the front door at seven-thirty, right where I could see it.

"For your appointment, angel," she said. "Just in case they want you to stay for a night or two."

She smiled the whole time she said it.

Daddy had been gone since Saturday night.

The house felt different without him.

I sat on the bottom stair with my rabbit in my lap and the black pen hidden in his ear.

My heart was going so fast I could feel it in my fingers.

Faye walked around the house with a cup of coffee.

She was humming again.

When she was sure nobody was watching, she was a different person.

She wasn't humming for me.

She was humming for the house.

The housekeeper had been sent home for the week.

Faye had said so at breakfast, in her sweet voice.

"We'll just have a girls' week," she said. "You and me."

Now it was twenty minutes to eight, and the whole big house was empty and quiet.

Faye came and stood over me on the stairs.

"Go put on your shoes," she said.

I looked at her.

I felt my throat start to tighten.

I thought about Uncle Desmond's face in the mirror of the car.

I thought about the five uncles in the kitchen, all looking at me.
