Chapter 24: Number Twelve
Griffin came to Thanksgiving with a store-bought pie and stood on the porch until Dylan opened the door.
"You can come in, you know," Dylan said.
"I wasn't sure I'd been asked by everybody."
"You were asked by me."
Griffin came in.
I seated him at the side of the table, not the head, and nobody said a word about it.
Rhett and Dylan fought over the last drumstick with the seriousness of men settling a border.
Griffin carved the turkey too thick, and Rhett told him so, and Griffin said, "Yes, sir."
After pie, Dylan wiped his hands on a napkin and cleared his throat.
"Title game is Saturday," he said. "I want to wear twelve."
Nobody moved.
Griffin set his fork down.
"It's not mine to give," he said, and his voice came out rough. "It's the Academy's number. Anyone can wear it."
"I know. I wanted to ask you anyway."
"Why that one?"
"Mom has it tattooed on her wrist." Dylan looked at the table. "I'd like to wear it for real."
