Chapter 6: Six Hours

Rhett took the news, with his shoulders going up around his ears.

He didn't cry, and he didn't speak.

He picked a fry off his plate and put it back down.

"Okay," he said finally. "So that's a real thing now."

"It's a real thing," I said.

"I don't feel different."

"You shouldn't."

"I thought I would." He looked at the paper the technician had printed for us. "I thought there'd be a feeling, like when you find out you're allergic to something."

I reached over and tucked a curl behind his ear.

He let me.

"Can I still be Rhett Hartsell?" he asked.

"You're Everett Hartsell on every paper you own, and you're Rhett to me."

"Both?"

"Both."

"Because I'm not going to be Everett Dellinger or whatever," he said, with a sudden wet laugh. "I've got a whole closet of Stags hoodies."

"You've also got a grandmother who'd faint."

"She'd faint in pearls, though." He wiped his eyes with the heel of his hand. "That's something."

That was the first time all day I laughed.

We drove to the Academy.

Griffin's truck sat alone on the empty practice field with the lights still off.

He was in the cab with the window down, staring at the goalposts.

When he saw us coming across the grass, he got out and stood very straight.

I handed him the paper.

He read it.

Then he read it again, slower, with his lips moving.

"Labs make mistakes," he said.
