Chapter 10: The Price of Rent
Micah's POV
Brady found me in the faculty lot on Friday afternoon, leaning on the hood of my car.
Brady never waited for anyone, so I knew it was on purpose.
"Professor," he said. "Good news. I read your draft."
I hadn't sent a draft.
I had sent him a voice file of the first two minutes, and he had played it, at most, on the walk across the quad.
"It needs work," he said.
"What kind of work?"
"The speech is fine. It's the other thing." He took out a paper cup of coffee that was somebody else's and drank from it. "Cora needs to give an apology at the gala. A real one. She won't write it. She's in one of her moods."
I said nothing.
"You write it. Something sad and clean, and you walk her through it. She trusts you." He smiled. "She's been trusting you all week, hasn't she?"
"I don't know what you mean."
"Of course you do." He tapped the roof of my car. "I'll cover your mother's rent for a year, in advance. Paid straight to the landlord. You write Cora's apology, and she reads it onstage, and I forget about the Ethics paper forever."
My mother's rent was on a sticky note in my wallet, in her round handwriting, and it had been there since March.
"I'll think about it," I said.
"Do." He pushed off the car. "And Micah? I meant what I said. Stay away from her."
"Who's she?"
"You really are a good writer," Brady said.
He walked off, and I stood there with my hand on my keys, shaking.
