Micah read my letter standing up, under the green lamp on the circulation desk.

I had folded it in thirds and written it in pencil, in my own plain print.

It took him a long time to read, for something so short.

I watched his face instead of the page.

I knew the words.

Dear Micah,

I read your margins for a year and never once looked up.

I am looking up.

You told me I never asked. So here is everything I'm asking. Who are you when you aren't afraid? What do you eat when nobody's watching? Will you stay for the whole book this time?

I haven't forgiven you for the two years.

I forgive you for the morning you didn't zip the suitcase.

I'm learning which one matters more.

He read it twice.

When he lowered it, his eyes were wet behind his glasses, and he did not hide it.

"There's a signature," he said.

"I thought I'd better."

"It has a dash under it."

"Of course it does."

He laughed, and then he stopped laughing and put the paper to his chest.

"The committee wrote to me this afternoon," he said. "My degrees stand. No fellowship, no teaching post. A note in my file, and a handshake."

"Micah."

"The note says I disclosed voluntarily." He swallowed. "I'd have taken the handshake without the note."

"You get both."

"I get a night desk."

"You get a night desk and a girl who makes terrible coffee."

He came around the desk, and I put both hands on his face and kissed him.
