Chapter 4: The Porch
Patrick threw the sign flat on the grass.
"What the hell is this?"
"It's a sign, Patrick. It says for sale."
"We didn't agree to anything."
"You asked for a divorce. I gave you my condition. That's agreeing."
Nellie had stopped swinging.
She sat very still with her boots hanging and her eyes going back and forth between us.
I went down the steps so she wouldn't have to watch it over the rail.
Bria got out of the car with her swatches.
She stood by the hood in white sneakers and a cream sweater.
Across the street, a man stopped raking.
Two doors down, the couple with the twins came out on their porch with their coffee.
Patrick saw them, and he lowered his voice to something he thought sounded reasonable.
"Aileen, think about Nellie. This is her home."
"It is. That's why I'm not handing it to your girlfriend for a coat of paint."
"You leave for work at four-thirty in the morning." He raised his voice again, for the street. "Who gets her up? Who gets her dressed? If you push this, I'll ask for custody, and I'll get it."
The man across the street leaned on his rake.
I folded my arms.
"Okay," I said. "What's her teacher's name?"
Patrick blinked.
"What?"
"Her daycare teacher. She's had the same one for a year. What's her name?"
"That's not the point."
"What room is Nellie in?"
Nothing.
"It's the Ladybug Room. It has a ladybug on the door the size of a pizza." I held up a finger. "What's she allergic to?"
"She's not allergic to anything."
"Amoxicillin. She broke out in hives on her second birthday, and you were in Phoenix." Another finger. "Shoe size?"
