Chapter 4: The Audit
Carlton found me on my own front steps in Echo Park at six that evening, sitting next to a bike and a pizza box.
He was holding his tie in one hand.
"You went to see Margo without me," he said.
"I went to eat lunch."
"With nine women who'd been paid to report on you."
"Eight. One of them just wanted the chicken."
He sat down on the step below mine, which put his head level with my knees.
"Do you want a slice?"
"I don't eat pizza from boxes."
"It's the same pizza."
"It's cold."
"It's the best thing about it."
He took a slice.
He ate half of it in two bites and then looked at me.
"Okay," I said. "Margo said to ask you what you're pretending to be. So I'm asking."
He wiped his fingers on his pants, which were gray wool.
"My father froze my cards in March," he said.
I waited for the rest.
"All of them. He gave me a monthly allowance instead, and Vera's office sees every purchase. A girl on the side who costs me fifteen dollars a week and a burrito doesn't look like a girl on the side. It looks like I'm moving money somewhere else."
"Where?"
"They think gambling. Or drugs. Or a second family."
"A second family."
"I know."
"Where would you hide a family?"
"It's Los Angeles, Millie. People hide whole zoos."
I laughed before I could stop it.
He laughed too, a short surprised sound, and then rubbed his face.
"There's a vote at the Founders' Dinner in six weeks. My father is handing over his shares to whichever of us the board thinks has judgment. Vera wants them for her own side. If my spending doesn't look normal by then, she wins."
