Chapter 7: A Vote
Cale stood up off the bucket.
He did it slowly, and then he wasn't slow at all.
He was through the gate and onto the river road before I'd taken a step.
His shirt split down the back as he went.
His wolf was coming, black and huge, and the change was rolling up his spine in a ripple of fur.
The Great House was three miles up the valley.
Garth was in it.
"Cale!"
He didn't stop.
I ran.
I'd spent two years running ridges in the dark, and he'd spent them at a desk.
I caught him at the bend before the bridge.
I didn't grab him from behind.
I went around him and stood in the road.
He nearly went through me.
He pulled up so hard his boots tore the gravel.
He stood there half-changed, his hands gone to claws, his eyes gone gold, breathing.
"Move," he said.
It came out as a growl.
"No."
"He put his hands on you."
"I know. I was there."
"Move, Sorrel. I'll kill him. I'll kill him in front of my mother and let her watch."
"And then what?"
He stared at me.
"Then he's a dead hero," I said. "And you're the Alpha's son who murdered his own uncle the night after his rite, over a girl who wrote him a love letter. Your mother would make sure that's the story. She's good at stories."
His chest was heaving.
The claws didn't go back in.
"Everyone would know what he did," he said.
"No. Everyone would know what you did. Nobody would ever hear his name next to mine. Nobody would ever hear about the other seven."
The river was loud under the bridge.
Somewhere behind me, I could hear the squad coming down the road at a jog, Edda swearing at the front.
"I didn't come home for your fists," I said. "I came for a vote."
Slowly, his hands came back.
Fingers, nails, skin.
The gold went out of his eyes.
