Chapter 12: The Moot

The Moot began at ten, and by ten past, Declan was on his feet in front of seven Alphas, begging for my daughter.

He did it well.

He had shaved, and he wore the dark suit from our wedding.

"I have failed her," he said. "I won't pretend I haven't. I will answer for that."

"But she is eleven years old. She belongs with her father and her pack."

The hall was packed to the doors.

Torin sat on the Crown seat with his scarred arm along the rest.

I sat at the table on the left with my hands flat in front of me.

Felicity sat in the front row of the gallery, in a pale cardigan, with Jasper on her lap and a tissue in her fist.

She was already crying.

At the back, beside the housekeeper, Hazel sat very straight in her good coat.

I had asked her to stay at the guest house.

She had looked at me and said, "It's about me," and put her shoes on.

When Declan finished, the old Alpha of the eastern packs cleared his throat.

"The Luna may answer."

"I'm not a Luna," I said, standing. "I'm Cora Mercer."

Nobody moved.

"I'll answer with one fact." I kept my wrists still. "On the night of the thunderstorm, my daughter called her father three times from an empty house."

"That is a grave charge," said the old Alpha, but he was looking at Declan.

"It isn't a charge. It's a recording."

The Crown inspector tapped a tablet, and the great screen behind the dais lit up.

It showed a porch in the rain.

The clock in the corner said 7:52, and Felicity was reading her phone and smiling.

I let them watch it all.

I watched the faces, the way Torin had taught me.
