Chapter 15: The Locked Drawer Opens
Torin's POV
The drawer was open on the desk when she came in, and the desk was still a foot out of place from the night before.
Neither of us mentioned that.
I had put the file where she would see it first, with nothing on top.
Cora stood in the doorway with her coat still on.
"Sit," I said.
"I'll stand."
So I told her standing.
I told her what Declan had asked of me that dawn.
I told her he had wanted it sealed for a widow seven months along.
"It was in my power to do," I said. "So I did it, and I put my name under it."
She picked up the file and opened it.
She read standing up, and I watched her hands.
They were steady, and that was worse than if they'd shaken.
She turned to the last page.
It was the sealing order, and it had my name at the bottom, in my handwriting, dated seven years ago.
"Seven years," she said.
"Yes."
"You were Marshal at the Midwinter Moots. You sat on the dais in the Redfern years."
"Yes."
"You watched him leave me at the table to take her calls."
I had known she would get there.
I had known it since the parking lot, and I still wasn't ready.
"Three Midwinters," I said. "I saw it. I knew why he went."
"And you said nothing."
"It was his to tell."
"It was mine to know." She shut the file very gently. "I had a husband who walked out on me and our daughter for seven years, and I thought it was love for another woman. I thought I was ugly. I thought I was boring."
