Everyone in the room looked at me.
Lorenzo too.
He'd stopped backing toward the door. He was waiting.
I knew what he expected.
He expected a warehouse in Cicero. A car trunk. The lake.
It was what he would have done.
"I don't want him dead," I said.
Lorenzo's shoulders dropped an inch.
"I want him to take the same trip I did."
Don Bruno tilted his head.
"Tell me."
"Drive him to the Starlite Motel outside Deming," I said. "Room 9. Put him on the bed. Take his shoes and his phone and his wallet."
Lorenzo's face changed.
"At sunrise, open the door. There's a town twenty miles east. He can walk to it."
"Vera."
"After that, he doesn't come back to Chicago. Not for Mom's birthday. Not for her funeral. Not ever."
"Vera, you can't."
"His debts stay his," I said. "Let his bookmakers find him in the desert if they want him."
