Chapter 19: The Night Before
"I'm going in," Si-on said.
They were in the flat above the noodle shop, at midnight, with the lamp off and the window open on the dark laundry.
Du-sik had gone down to guard the stairs.
"I know," Seo-jin said.
"You're not going to argue?"
"I argued in the car for two hours. You did not hear me, so I have stopped."
Si-on sat on the edge of the iron bed with the red cardigan in his lap.
He had folded it and unfolded it so many times the creases were soft.
"He wants me alive, and he wants me in front of his captains."
"He wants them to see his heir come in on his own legs."
"Yes," Seo-jin said.
"So I come in on my own legs. And you're behind me."
"I will be behind you," Seo-jin said. "I will be so close behind you that you will feel it."
Si-on put the cardigan on the nightstand.
He turned, took the Devil's face in both hands, and looked at it in the thin light from the street.
"Tonight," he said, "I don't want anything clever. I don't want to talk about it. I want you to take your time."
Seo-jin's eyes went dark.
"Take off your shirt."
Si-on did.
He stood, and the trousers followed.
He got onto the mattress on his side, facing the wall, with the iron rail cold at his shoulder.
