Chapter 11: The Price
They came at four that afternoon, in five cars, through the villa's open gate.
I was on the terrace with my mother's chair beside me and my brothers a few steps off.
Edoardo got out of the first car with Silvia and the baby.
My father got out of the second.
He had flown in on Edoardo's plane.
I looked at him, and he looked back at me without any shame at all.
"Viviana," he said. "I'm glad you found your mother. We can end this now."
"You and Edoardo?"
"The family. You will come home, and the Veto will be lifted by mutual agreement. Your mother will return as if from the hospital."
"No."
"You don't understand what you're refusing."
"I understand everything," I said. "I just spent an hour with Mama."
My father's face didn't change.
He had been looking at me, and he turned his head a little, toward the gate.
Cassio Rinaldi was walking up the drive with four of his men behind him.
His jacket was open, and the bandage showed at his shoulder.
He had driven to the airport and flown commercial, and he looked worn out.
"There he is," my father said. "Tell her, Rinaldi. Or shall I?"
Nobody spoke.
Silvia's arms tightened on the baby.
Edoardo watched Cassio with a small, interested smile.
"My daughter has been living in your house, and she thinks he's a hero," my father said. He said it to the terrace, to the lake, to the wind. "Ask him why he took her in. Ask him what he paid me for five years."
