Chapter 10: The Range House
Eamon's POV
I had made a speech in front of forty people, and I had no plan for what came after it.
She stood on the frozen road in her work jacket with the wind pulling at her hair, and she was still angry.
I kept my distance.
"I'll go back in," I said. "Tell me, and I'll go."
"You said it where nothing could happen."
"That was the idea."
"Then why did you follow me out of the room?"
"Because I'm a coward who's good at speeches," I said. "I'd rather not stand in the commissary for the next hour and watch you not look at me."
She almost laughed.
Then she walked off down the road toward the range, and I took that as an order to follow.
The range house was a plywood shed at the end of the firing line with a heater, a bench and a lantern.
I pushed the door open with my shoulder and lit the lamp.
She stood inside with her arms folded.
"Why did you say it?" she asked.
"Because it was true."
"That isn't a reason."
"It's the only one I have."
She stared at me in the yellow light.
"I don't know your name," I said. "Your real one. I don't know where you're from or who you left, and I can't ask, and you've never once told me a single thing about yourself I could hold on to."
"That's the program."
"It isn't only the program. You tell people what you're building and nothing else. I've watched you for a month."
"And you want to hold on to me."
"I want to know what it is I'd be losing," I said.
