Chapter 14: The Visitor Profile

Eamon unrolled a fresh sheet of drawing paper across the long bench at one in the morning and handed me a pencil.

"Don't talk to me about feelings," he said. "Give me dates."

I wrote JULY at the top of the sheet, and under it: Ciara.

"She walked in on the ninth," I said. "Conor had the DNA result on the table at breakfast."

"When did the logins start?"

"August. The first Tuesday."

"And your laptop was where on Tuesdays?"

"On my desk, with the lid shut. I never took it to the test site. They don't allow devices there either."

He tapped the paper with his good hand.

"So a person was using it who had a reason to be in your room on Tuesday evenings."

"Everybody had a reason to be in my room," I said. "Nobody locks anything in that house. Dad said a locked door was an invitation."

"Who asked to borrow the laptop?"

I put the pencil down.

"Ciara," I said. "Most evenings. The first week she said her own was slow, and she needed to send pictures to Mom, because Mom doesn't open email on a phone."

"Did she log in as you?"

"She couldn't. I set her up a guest profile. I called it Visitor, with no password, so she wouldn't have to ask me every time."

Eamon didn't say anything for a moment.

"That's a good detail," he said carefully. "The server your brother is holding shows a login from your laptop. Does it show which profile?"

"I don't know. I don't think anyone looked."

"Someone should."

"Someone already did," I said, and I started to smile, and it felt unfamiliar on my face. "I did. Years ago."
