Pio walked her out through the front of the restaurant, past the lit window and the cured meat.
He did not touch her arm.
He held the street door, and she stepped through it in her white dress into the October wind, and he let the door close.
I followed her out.
Atwells Avenue was busy for a Tuesday.
Two bars were open down the block, and a line stood outside the bakery for the late trays.
Paola took a few steps and stopped, because there was nowhere to walk to.
Ugo's black car was already gone from the curb.
Her purse hung from one wrist, but the cracked phone was on the table behind us, and the black card had stopped working the day Raf's mother heard.
She reached into her purse, found her other phone, and the screen lit her face.
"They took my key," she said, to no one. "The manager texted. I'm fired. He says Mr. Tessari doesn't know a Paola."
She laughed, and the laugh broke in the middle.
"Doesn't know me."
Two girls outside the bakery had turned.
One of them nudged the other, and a phone came up.
"That's her," I heard. "The one from the doorway video."
