Chapter 8: The Lobby

Narragansett Trust, Cranston branch, opened at nine on Monday.

I was the first customer through the door.

I wore my old gray suit, the one that fit me best, with my hair in the knot and my mother's bracelet on my wrist.

I carried a manila folder.

A dozen people were in line already.

A teller with a tight bun worked the first window.

At the back was a glass office with CRAIG DELANEY, BRANCH MANAGER on the door.

I did not go to the window.

I walked straight to the middle of the lobby, where everyone could see me, and I stopped under the big clock.

"Craig," I said, in the voice I use to read numbers aloud.

The room turned.

Craig came out of the glass office with a coffee and a smile that fell off his face in stages.

"Carla, you can't be in here. We talked about this."

"We didn't talk. You emptied our account and put my things on the curb."

"Let's go to my office."

"No. I'm a customer. I have a joint account here, number ending in 4471, and I'd like to ask a question about a transfer."

The teller stopped counting.

An old man in the line took off his hat.

"This is not the place," Craig said, low.

"It's a bank. Where else do you ask about money?"

I opened the folder.

I had printed the statement at the library on Sunday, and highlighted one line in yellow.

"Saturday, October tenth. Eleven forty p.m. A wire of fifty-eight thousand, two hundred dollars to an account at a different bank, in your name only."

I read the number slowly, and let it sit.

"That's all of it," I said.
