Chapter 10: Seven Months

I took the phone out of Jess's hand.

Serena sat on my front steps in a white coat, crying beautifully.

Behind her, the front door of my house was shut.

"He changed the locks," she sobbed at the camera. "After everything. Five months of carrying his son. He says he can't look at me. He says I remind him."

"Remind him of what?" Jess said.

I knew.

The driver had come home.

I gave Jess her phone back.

Rory had his arms folded and his jaw set.

"That's him knowing," he said. "Or nearly knowing."

"Or it's him finally seeing her," I said. "Either way, she's out of my house."

I couldn't help it.

I smiled.

Jess looked at me and grinned back.

"Oh, I like you," she said. "I really like you. You're horrible."

Two days later, at half past eleven on a Wednesday, the bell over the café door rang.

The lunch rush was just starting. Every table was full. The old man was in his corner with his four sugars.

I was behind the counter, refilling the pastry case.

I looked up.

Serena Abate walked into Jess's café in a cream cashmere coat and sunglasses, one hand on her belly.

She was bigger than she'd been on the anniversary. Six and a half months, round and high.

She took off the sunglasses and looked around at the plastic chairs and the chalkboard and the dented red coffee machine.

"Wow," she said. "So this is the afterlife."

Jess came out of the kitchen with a tray and stopped.

"Is that her?"

"That's her," I said.

Serena walked straight to the counter.
