Chapter 22: The Seat
The muzzle pressed my temple hard enough to hurt.
"Nobody moves," Mariano said again. "Nobody, or I do it."
Forty guns pointed at us from both sides of the long table.
Not one of them could fire without going through me.
"Put them down, Emanuele," my cousin said. "Tell your boy-soldiers. I'm walking out with my little girl."
"I'm not your girl," I said.
He tightened his fist in my hair.
"Quiet."
Across the cloth, Emanuele stood with his good hand open and his face gone to stone.
He didn't look at the gun.
He looked at me, and I saw him ask me, without a word, what I wanted him to do.
I shook my head, a quarter of an inch.
Don't.
My mother used to take the gun out of my father's hand.
I had seen it twice, when I was small.
He came home furious one night with a pistol and a name in his mouth, and she walked straight into the kitchen and stood against his chest.
She didn't pull, and she didn't shout.
She laid her palm over the back of his fist, and she said his name.
