Chapter 11: The Garage

Cillian's POV

She pulled away from me so fast that the sheet went with her.

She sat against the headboard with her knees up and her good eye fixed on my face.

I did not need to ask what she had heard.

I had been waiting three years for that exact look, and I had told myself I was ready.

I was not.

"Say it," she said.

Her voice was a thin rasp, and it did not shake.

"Helena."

"Say the three words again. Say them like you did in the garage."

I could have lied.

I had promised her I wouldn't, and I would have kept that promise if it killed me.

I sat up on the edge of the bed with my back to the wall and my hands open on my knees.

"Hold still," I said. "I'll be quick. I'm sorry."

She closed her eye.

"It was you."

"Yes."

The lamp hummed.

Somewhere downstairs Maeve was running water in the sink, singing under her breath, because she had no idea.

"Three years ago, a week before your hearing, Damian called me to the garage at midnight," I said.

"He said you had the evidence to put Camilla in prison and you meant to use it. He said you had to be unable to testify."

"I thought he meant a bribe, or a scare."

"He meant the chair and the rope. He had already tied you. He stood there with his hands in his pockets while I understood it."

She did not move.

"Vernon Lowe was in the doorway," I said. "Vernon wanted you dead."

"He said a dead woman never changes her mind, and he said it twice."

"Damian said, no, not dead. She's mine. Make her harmless."

"And you did," she said.

"Yes."

I made myself keep my eyes on her.

"Vernon would have done it himself if I had said no. He had a knife of his own. I could see it."

"I told myself that if I did it, I could keep it small. If I did it, it would stop."
