Chapter 19: The Gun on the Table
My father's house had been dark for four days when I let myself into the kitchen that night.
Marianne's keys were still on the hook by the door.
I put the kettle on, and stood by it with my arms wrapped around my ribs until it screamed.
Then I turned around, and Luciano was in the kitchen doorway.
I had not asked him in.
The back door stood open behind him, the lock turned from outside with a tool I did not want to know the name of.
"You broke into my father's house," I said.
"Yes."
He did not apologize for it.
He stood with his hands where I could see them, and his eyes on my face.
"I'll leave when you tell me to," he said.
"I wanted to say three things first.
"Then you can have the last word, and the door."
I put the kettle down.
"Say them."
He crossed to the table slowly, as one crosses a room with a frightened animal in it.
He reached into his coat and set something on the wood.
My father's revolver.
