Chapter 10: The Ferrante Table
The Ferrante family ate on Sundays at four, at the long table in Ottavio's house, and nobody had ever missed one without a funeral.
Silvio walked in at ten past four with his sister on his arm and a leather folder under the other.
Twenty-two people sat at the table.
Cousins, uncles, the men who worked the Fox Point docks and their wives, all of them with forks halfway to their mouths.
Ottavio sat at the head carving a roast.
He looked up, and the knife stopped.
"Look who remembered his family," he said, and smiled the wide smile. "Sit, sit. Gianna, you gave us a scare. We'd have called the police."
"You wouldn't have," Gianna said.
She stayed on her feet.
Outside, Vittorio sat in a black car with the engine off, because Silvio had asked him to wait.
It had been the hardest thing Silvio had ever asked of anyone.
"I won't sit," Silvio said. "I came to read something."
