Chapter 11: The Sit-Down
The sit-down was held in the locked back room of a restaurant on Atwells Avenue that belonged to neither family.
One long table, one lamp, and a plate of untouched bread.
At the head sat the old Rizzo don, seventy-three years old and thin as a rail.
He had a cane across his knees and a face.
Dario sat at his right, trying to look calm.
Vittorio sat opposite with Bruno at his back.
Silvio sat beside Vittorio, with the folder open in front of him.
Four Ferrante cousins held Ottavio in a chair at the end of the table.
His wrists were tied with a necktie.
His camel coat was torn at the shoulder, and he had stopped smiling.
"We are here about four million, one hundred thousand dollars," the old don said.
His voice was a dry rasp.
"My son says Silvio Ferrante took it. Ottavio Ferrante says the same. Silvio Ferrante says no. I will hear the bookkeeper."
Silvio stood.
He had never spoken to a room.
He thought of the ring and the corner at the Armory.
