Chapter 12: Sunday Dinner

Lacey's POV

Bring the girl, she had said, and now I stood on a porch in Franklin, Tennessee, being the girl.

The house was a brick two-story with black shutters and a wreath on the door that had been up since Labor Day.

Colt rang the bell.

Jesse stood on the other side of me with his hands in his pockets and his ears already pink.

Neither of them looked at me or at each other.

"Smile," Colt said, out of the side of his mouth.

"I am smiling."

"Not with your teeth."

"I only have the one kind of teeth," I said.

The door opened.

The groom's mother had put on a blue dress and pearls and her hair set hard.

She opened her arms with all her teeth showing.

"Lacey," she said. "Honey. You came."

"Thank you for having me."

"Oh, it's nothing, a woman your age must get so few home-cooked meals."

She hugged me.

It was a real hug, warm and perfumed, and I could feel her studying the back of my head the entire time.

"And my baby," she said.

Jesse let her take his face in both hands.

"Hi, Mama."
