Chapter 16: The Jeweler
The shop on Exchange Street had a brass bell over the door.
A man stood behind the counter with a loupe pushed up on his forehead.
He was small and neat and about seventy, and he looked at Ansel's salt-stiff jacket and then at mine.
"We're closed for lunch," he said.
"The door was open," said Ansel.
"The door is always open. That's how I know when to be rude."
"We're looking for a necklace you bought four years ago," I said. "Emeralds, set in gold, nineteen stones. It came in a velvet case."
His face didn't change at all.
That was how I knew we had the right shop.
"I buy a lot of necklaces."
"A woman in pearls and a silver bob carried it in," I said.
"My father's logbook has the date and the hour."
I laid my father's logbook on the glass.
The jeweler looked down at it, at the square handwriting, and then up at me.
"Your father was a lobsterman."
"He was."
"He had a good face," the jeweler said. "I remember him."
