Chapter 19: Not a Prize

"Home," Ansel said again, on the town hall steps.

"Yes."

"You said that like it was a place."

"It is a place. It has a hospital, a bed and a coffee machine I hate."

"Wynne."

"Listen to me before you say anything."

I took my hand out of his, and I watched that cost him.

"Everyone in that hall thinks tonight was a happy ending," I said.

"A bad mother, a lost bride, a boat saved, and the nurse falls into the man's arms."

"That isn't what this is."

"What is it?"

"You just lost your mother and your fiancee and your name on the gate in the same week."

"I did."

"And I'm the one who's left standing in the room."

His jaw tightened.

"You think I'd use you to fill a hole."

"I think you wouldn't notice you were doing it."

"I won't be your consolation, Ansel. I won't be the prize at the bottom of your worst week."

"I looked for you for three years."

"You looked for a woman in the dark. You haven't met me in daylight for more than ten days."

He took that, and he nodded slowly.

"That's fair," he said.

"I know it's fair."

"Then what do you want?"

"I want one night where nobody has a reason to be in the room but us."
