Chapter 10: The Last Page
Maija's POV
I took him into the garage at midnight, through the back door and past the camera.
It was the first time he had crossed the threshold of that building.
He stopped in the doorway of the dispatch room with snow melting on his shoulders.
He looked at the desk, the map and the radio.
"This is where you sit," he said.
"Every night," I said.
"I've looked at that window for eleven weeks."
"Come in.
"It's a county building."
He came in and stood behind my chair.
I put the binder on the blotter, opened it from the back and switched on the lamp.
The supervisor had gone home at ten.
The plow drivers were out, and the radio muttered low.
I had four hours, and I did not intend to waste one.
"Read it with me," I said.
"Pavel told me the numbers," Matt said.
"I haven't read the pages."
"You didn't open it in your own warehouse?"
"I did not want to see his signature," Matt said.
"I'm ashamed of that."
I turned back one page, and then another.
My father's purchase summaries ran in tidy columns, six winters of them.
