Chapter 12: The Locked Door
I told Matt I was going, and he said no, and then he said nothing at all, because I had told him I was going.
"You wait a mile off on the county road," I said.
"You do not come in unless I call.
"And if I say stop, you go."
"If you say stop, I go," he said.
"I'll be on the road."
He followed my car to the turnoff at eleven-thirty and pulled his sedan onto the shoulder.
I took my own car the rest of the way, with the pepper spray in my pocket and my phone recording in my coat.
The Proctor farm looked the way it had the Saturday before, a steel barn and a gravel yard and cattle in the snow.
Andy's Ford stood by the barn door.
He came out of the clinic office in his jacket, smiling, with his hands open.
"You came," he said.
"You said you had something to show me."
"I do.
"Come in out of the cold."
I followed him through the barn.
The air smelled of hay and iodine, and a heifer lowed somewhere in the dark.
His office was a small room at the back with a steel desk and a space heater.
He shut the door behind me.
I did not like the sound it made.
"Sit," he said.
I stayed standing.
On the desk lay a blue binder identical to my father's, open to a page of ledger columns.
A green-lettered tab stuck out of the top that read HAUGEN SALT, SUPERIOR.
I looked at it, and Andy watched me look.
