Chapter 24: Both Rings

They did it on Saturday, at four, in the aisle between the nails and the paint.

Harvey had cleared the center of the store and set his old oak chair beside the counter.

He sat in it with his canvas apron over his good shirt.

The bakery woman had brought a sheet cake, and the laundromat man had brought a folding table.

Sisi stood beside her father by the register, in the green dress, with her hair up, and Abel stood next to her.

Abel was still barred from the wards for six more days.

He had told Virginia he had never been so happy to be unemployed.

The thin lawyer sat in a folding chair in the corner, billing no one.

The editor from the Tribune leaned in the doorway with his notepad closed.

"Off the record," he'd said at the door. "I'm a guest."

Greta was not there.

Her card had come that morning, in the mail, to the store, in her real handwriting.

Tobias had read the address on the front and put it in the drawer under the register without opening it.

"I'll open it when I'm ready," he had said. "Not when someone else decides."

Now he stood at the front of the store in his shirtsleeves, with his hands at his sides.

Virginia came down the aisle on her father's arm in a cream blouse that she had worn the night she walked into the dark.

She hadn't planned it, and when she had put it on that morning, she had laughed out loud.
