Chapter 10: What He Signed
Lucan put the folded letter on the Marshal's desk and did not sit down.
"What's on page two?" he asked.
"I don't know." Garrick stood behind the desk with the gray file open under his hand. "Page one is a test result. Page two is sealed with my house's seal, and I never sealed it."
"Ansel knows what it says."
"Yes."
"Then your nephew's husband has read a page about me that I have never seen."
"Yes."
Lucan breathed in slowly.
"I'll get to that," he said. "First I want to ask about this."
He tapped the letter.
It was two lines long, in a lawyer's neat hand.
*The engagement between Duke Merrow and Lord Perrin Wexcombe is dissolved by mutual consent. House Wexcombe consents.*
At the bottom was a round red stamp.
Garrick looked at it.
His face did not change, but the glass in the window hummed once and stopped.
"That's the seal of my house," he said.
"Yes."
"I never saw this."
"Your house consented to it," Lucan said. "Nine days before the ball, your house said it was fine to end me by lawyer. Nobody asked me. Nobody told me. I got two lines."
"Lucan."
"For four years you sat at the end of every court dinner, Marshal. You never said a word to me. Not hello, not go home. And while you sat there, a stamp with your name on it finished three years of my life."
"I didn't know."
"Then who did?"
The door opened behind him.
Corin Lothian stood in the doorway with his hands at his sides and his freckled face gone white.
"I did," he said.
Neither of them said anything.
"A stack of house consents comes to me every week, Marshal. Marriages, leases, wills. Lord Perrin's lawyer sent it with a note saying it was routine, for the Marshal's seal." Corin looked at the floor. "I stamped it. I didn't read it. It was nine pages down in the pile."
