Chapter 24: The Marshal Is My Mate
The hall waited for Lucan's answer.
Three thousand people did not breathe, and the Empress leaned forward on her throne.
Lucan looked at the man in front of him.
He thought of a ballroom, a glove and a bare palm on a wrist.
"Yes," he said.
It came out too quietly, and he said it again, loudly enough to carry to the doors.
"Yes. By my own choice. For no reason but this one."
The hall broke.
The shout went up from the floor to the great glass dome. It went on and on, until the Empress rose from her throne and lifted one hand, and it died down.
"The registrar," she said.
A thin man in black came forward with the big gray book.
It was the same book, and the same man.
He opened it to a clean page and held out a pen.
"Marshal," he said, with a small, helpless smile. "Duke. We have had a busy month."
Garrick signed first.
His handwriting was square and black and did not shake.
Lucan took the pen and wrote his name under it.
Lucan Merrow, Duke of Merrow.
The registrar pointed at the column on the right, where each line carried one word for what the two were to each other.
The last time, Garrick had written spouse.
This time he left the pen in Lucan's hand.
Lucan looked at the empty space for a moment.
Then he wrote it in his own letters, large enough for the front rows to read.
Mate.
Garrick read it and went completely still.
Lucan capped the pen and laid it down.
"In ink," he said.
"In ink," Garrick said, and his voice broke in the middle.
The registrar blotted the page and shut the book with both hands.
"It is registered," he said.
The court rose to its feet and clapped.
Down in the front row, Corin pulled a handkerchief out of his sleeve and said something rude into it that nobody heard.
