Chapter 11: Clear the Air
On Wednesday night, Carson's mother set a table for seven and called it a chance to clear the air.
Cass had arranged it. Her text to me said our mothers should sit down together before Saturday, for everyone's sake.
My mother read it over my shoulder in her navy dress and said, "We're going."
It was a big brick house in Rocky River, with a dining room I had eaten Easter lunch in four times.
Carson's mother sat at the head of the table in pearls.
Cass sat at her right, and Carson beside Cass.
Ben took the chair nearest the kitchen door and kept his eyes on his plate.
My mother and I sat across from them. The last chair, beside mine, stayed empty until the soup.
Then the doorbell rang, and Elias came in still wearing his work jacket.
He sat down next to me.
His knee touched mine under the table, and I didn't move it.
"Let's all be adults," Carson's mother said, and passed the bread. "Victoria, I'm sorry this has been unpleasant. But there are things that need saying."
"Go ahead," my mother said. "I brought my own bread."
Nobody laughed.
Carson's mother began with the photograph.
She described it in a cold, clinical voice, and then she described it again.
My mother set down her spoon.
"You have a picture of two people holding hands in an elevator," she said. "And you want my daughter's character for it?"
"I want the truth."
"Then let's have some. Carson."
Carson looked up from his plate. He had the soft, hurt face he used when he was cornered.
