Chapter 38: The Coronation
"Yes," I said. "You have to wear shoes."
Davy put his head down on the table and groaned.
"Both of them," Corvin said.
"That's two shoes."
"It's a crown, Davy. It's very serious."
He wore them the whole way to Highcrown, all four days.
He took them off every night and put them back on every morning with the face of a man going to his hanging.
The Harvest Moon came up huge and orange over the river, the way it had the year before.
The whole of the Greywold seemed to be on the road to Highcrown.
The river villages came in carts, with their children in the back.
The free packs came down from the mountains with their drums.
My father came with the whole of the mill lane, and the smith's wife at the front.
The Council had chosen the old council house on the hill for it. Not Ravenscar Hall.
"Older than the crown," the eldest said. "That's the point."
I chose my own gown.
Not red. Not gold. Not serpent green, and not banner blue.
