Chapter 13: The Terms
He did not leave.
He stood in my doorway with his hand on the frame and his eyes on the floor.
"I'll go if you say it again," he said.
"But you told me to say it tonight, and I'd rather say it than walk out of here with it."
I picked up the fallen chair and set it at the far end of the table.
"Sit there," I said.
"Not next to me."
He sat.
The radiator knocked twice and went quiet.
"Start with August," I said.
"I turned thirty-four in July, and my father had been dead two months."
His voice was flat and careful.
"His will gave me a vote on the Foundation board on the first of August.
The first thing I did with it was ask to see the free-care books."
"Why?"
"Because a nurse wrote my father a letter in the spring.
It said the emergency room had been waiting on its payments since June.
My cousin told me it was a delay in the transition."
"Dalton."
"Dalton said it three times, in three different rooms, with the same smile.
