Chapter 14: Mother
Sybil Everhart lay propped against three pillows with a monitor ticking beside her.
Her pageboy had gone flat on one side and her pearls were in a dish on the tray table.
Without them she looked like somebody's mother.
She looked at the door when the nurse opened it.
Then she looked at the man in the doorway, and she did not say a word.
Niles crossed the room and stopped at the foot of the bed.
I stayed in the corridor with my hand on the door, where I could see them both.
"Mrs. Everhart," he said.
"Mother."
His voice broke on it.
"It's me.
My name is Niles.
I've known since Tuesday, and I should have walked up here the minute I did."
Her lips parted.
She pushed herself forward on the pillows, and the monitor began to race.
"Come here," she said.
He went around the side of the bed.
She raised her right hand and struck him across the face.
