Chapter 16: Suspended

The badge reader at the ED door blinked red and refused me.

I tried it twice.

The security guard, who had waved at me every morning for six years, looked at his shoes.

"Sorry, Doc," he said.

"They told me to take it."

I put my badge in his hand and my stethoscope in my bag.

The little brass bee on its tubing caught the light.

I walked out through the ambulance bay, where a medic I had trained was unloading a stretcher.

He started to say something, and I shook my head, and he closed his mouth.

At home I took off my scrubs and put on a sweatshirt.

I stood in the kitchen where I had sent a man away the night before and drank a glass of water standing up.

My phone buzzed nine times in ten minutes.

Half were friends from the department.

One was my mother in Erie, who had seen a clip on the news and wanted to know if I was in trouble.

I wrote back that I was fine.
