Chapter 20: The Table
On Sunday at one o'clock I walked the length of the dining room in my gray dress and a dead man's coat.
The table had both leaves pulled out again and forty places set.
Every chair was full but three.
The old men sat in their good wool jackets with their big hands flat on the cloth.
Their wives sat in black beside them, and the priest had his napkin tucked in his collar.
The room went quiet from one end to the other, as it had the first time.
This time they weren't looking at a girl.
They were looking at the coat.
It was a young man's dark overcoat, cut narrow, and I wore it over my shoulders with the sleeves empty.
Every Ferrante at that table had seen it on Dario.
An aunt put her hand over her mouth.
The uncle with the white mustache set down his glass.
Rocco walked beside me in a black suit and no tie, with the split on his knuckles scabbed over.
He did not touch me, and he did not walk ahead.
Behind us my father stood in the doorway in his one good jacket, with his hands clasped in front of him like a man waiting outside a principal's office.
"The foot," Rocco said, low, as he had on the first Sunday.
